1. Leotard

A leotard is a one-piece outfit covering the torso and freeing the legs. It’s the most common and practical piece of clothing for ballet class. Leotards come in various sleeve lengths, short, long, or sleeveless. Look for leotards made from soft, stretchy fabric that won’t irritate your child’s skin. Avoid anything with itchy seams, buttons, or decorations that can cause discomfort.
2. Tights or Ballet Leggings

Tights are typically worn under the leotard and give children warmth, coverage, and freedom of movement. They also help instructors observe leg positioning. Ballet tights are usually light pink, white or beige. If your child finds tights uncomfortable, fitted ballet leggings may be an alternative.
3. Ballet Shoes

Proper ballet shoes are essential. They provide the correct grip and protection and help your child feel like a “real” dancer. Most schools require leather or canvas ballet shoes with a full sole for toddlers. These shoes are soft, flexible, and designed to support young feet.
Make sure the shoes fit snugly but not too tightly. Some ballet shoes have an elastic strap to help them stay in place. Avoid using shoes that are too big because kids can easily trip or slip.
4. Skirt or Tutu (Optional)

Many children love wearing a ballet skirt or tutu over their leotard. Choose a short soft pull-on skirt that doesn’t get in the way of movement. Some leotards come with an attached skirt, which is a convenient option.
Avoid overly stiff or bulky tutus as they can be distracting or uncomfortable during class.
5. Warm up Ballet Sweater

Warm-up ballet sweaters for kids are essential for keeping muscles and joints (especially shoulders, back, and arms) warm, which improves flexibility and significantly reduces the risk of injury. These layers increase blood circulation to prepare the body for dance, enhance movement precision, and keep young dancers comfortable during the initial, colder parts of class.

Warm-up ballet sweaters are important to have.
This photo shows that the two girls who wear warm up sweaters feel comfortable, but the girl on the left who did not brought sweater, felt cold – so instructor gave her an adult vest to keep her warm.
6. Hair Neatly Tied Back
Keeping hair off the face is essential in ballet. It helps your child stay focused and allows instructors to see their head movements. A simple ponytail or bun works well. Use soft hair ties and avoid anything too tight or uncomfortable.
What Not to Wear
- Loose clothing: Avoid oversized shirts, dresses, or pants. These can get caught under feet or restrict movement.
- Jewellery: Earrings, bracelets, and necklaces can distract or become a safety hazard.
- School shoes or socks: Regular shoes are unsuitable for ballet, and socks can be slippery on dance floors.
- Costume-style outfits: While cute for play, costumes are not ideal for regular classes and can interfere with learning techniques.
