Dr. Lilley states that the root of every disease starts at the soul level and that “healing the body, in its entirety, necessitates healing the soul.”

In this post we’re introducing fascinating concepts from Dr. David Lilley’s book Healing the Soul Vol.2: The Archetype and the Psyche that speak to this profound truth and guide us to begin to understand how to truly heal.

Inside look into the paradigm of Conventional Medicine

Western medicine does not have a healing system of therapy.

It is of great concern that despite the remarkable advances of conventional Western medicine, it has failed to develop a healing system of therapy. The benefits this medical paradigm has delivered through high technology, sophisticated diagnostic methods, refined surgery and a formidable arsenal of chemical substances capable of combating infection, palliating and controlling symptoms and modifying body functions and chemistry, have not been attended by a commensurate ability to heal the sick. Healing calls for the restoration of a patient’s health to an on-going state of vigour, strength, resistance, comfort and balance experienced physically, intellectually and emotionally, independent of chemical support.

Suppression of disease by chemical drugs weakens the immune system and pushes disease inwards.

Disappearance of symptoms and signs through the intervention of drugs elaborated by orthodox pharmaceutical research is achieved through synthetic suppression, control or substitution and not through encouraging and enhancing the body’s own defensive and restorative powers: functions that are essential for healing. Drug action, despite bringing symptomatic relief and altering body chemistry, inevitably results in the energy of the disease being displaced inwards, disturbing the economy at a deeper and potentially more damaging level. This repressed energy will be transferred to future generations, steadily increasing the complexity and intensity of the disease continuum.

Hostility towards alternative forms of medicine, is an obstacle to medical progress.

Of greater concern than the failure to elaborate a healing therapeutic model is the complacency of the medical orthodoxy that has arisen from the measurable success of its superficial, mechanistic methods. Born of this, comes an arrogant unwillingness to recognize the limitations of the conventional model or to accept that there could be valid alternatives. This dismissive attitude, which in recent years has hardened to open hostility against alternative forms of medicine, is a serious obstacle to medical progress.

Therapeutics that are based on Newtonian physics, assert that matter is the ground of all existence, a limited and dangerous view.

The therapeutic horizon of conventional medicine is restricted and set by the parameters of Newtonian physics, which asserts that matter is the ground of all existence and that life springs from the confluence of chance events and evolves through random mutations in genetic material without purposeful design and without necessarily leading to the emergence of higher forms.

The Conventional view of medicine does not take into account the existence of the human soul.

In keeping with this scientific perspective, conventional medicine, no matter the personal persuasion of individuals within its ranks, has no concept of the existence of the human soul or of a spiritual dimension pervading and informing the material realm. Without these perceptions, the dominant school lacks insight into the true nature of the patient and lacks the means to penetrate the mystery of disease causation.

Conventional medicine believes that matter gives birth to mind, which is an anomaly to the universal laws of healing.

Although the notion of psychosomatic disease is not foreign to the orthodox medical mind, the deep significance of this phenomenon escapes conventional thinking, which is aligned with the anomalous doctrine of an inverted hierarchy in which matter gives birth to mind and to subjective consciousness. In such a hierarchy, emotions are biologically driven and controlled by a constellation of interacting brain systems amongst which the amygdala (memory brain) is crucial.

Conventional medicine believes that we are just the expression of our genes – an entirely limited perception through which we cannot heal.

The pivotal role of emotions in disturbed function and pathology is lost in their association with conditioned behaviour and patterns of physiological activity ruled by a plethora of hormones and neurotransmitters such as dopamine, noradrenaline, acetylcholine, serotonin, vasopressin, oxytocin and cortisol. With earthbound vision, science concludes that we are what we are because of genetic influences, our neuronal complexity and what our holding environment feeds into us.

In Shakespeare’s great tragedy, Hamlet, Hamlet’s mother Gertrude exhorts her son to cease his mourning for his father with these words: Good Hamlet, cast thy nighted colour off. Do not for ever with thy vailed lids seek for thy noble father in the dust.

another words: Open your eyes and go beyond the darkness of seeing your father as a physical body.

Conventional medicine blindly searches for the source of disease on the cellular level, a futile quest.

The fruitless searching for the origins of disease at cellular level focuses medical vision on the dust of life rather than its essence. Unable to assimilate the concept of the spiritual nature of the creation and of life and to incorporate this special knowledge into its science, the orthodoxy remains blind to the subtle source of the diseases that confront them; a source that lies at the level of the soul and its incessant engagement with the disruptive activities of the ego-self.

Chemistry-based ‘scientific’ medicine does not reach the root of disease, which lies beyond matter.

Misdirected focus on the material effects of disease is indicative of the vast gulf separating chemistry-based ‘scientific’ medicine from the healing paradigm of ‘soul’ medicine.
Given the imponderable nature of the soul and the ego-self-disease that afflicts it, the chemical tools of modern medicine, however they may modify the effects of disease, are incapable of influencing the soul-ego conflict that lies at its root.

The Conventional medical mind seeks to address disease with its arsenal of chemical substances, failing to perceive the cause of disease which begins at the more subtle, quantum levels.

Striving to counter an unseen enemy, unfathomable to ordinary medical investigative diagnosis, with primitive weapons that influence only the chemico-physical level of life, is the plight of orthodox medicine. Compounding this limitation is the inability of the average medical mind, accustomed to using powerful, Newtonian, molecular medicine, to perceive the healing potential of gentle, homeopathic, non-molecular, quantum medicine. Only medicine that is imponderable can address the imponderable nature of disease at the causative level.

The Healing Science of Homeopathy

According to universal laws that translate into fundamental principles of nature, spirit and matter are inseparable. To heal the body, we must heal the soul.

In part one of Healing the Soul vol.1, I considered the founding of homeopathic science by recounting the life of Samuel Hahnemann and other early pioneers and presented the fundamental principles upon which this healing science is based. In part two, my father’s remarkable life revealed the interpenetrating unity of spirit and matter and postulated that healing the body, in its entirety, necessitates healing the soul.

Homeopathy is able to address disease on the level of spirit and matter, taking into account the dysfunctional behaviors of the ego-based self.

To complement this knowledge and give it practical application, it is necessary to fathom the complexities of the human psyche and to recognise the dysfunctional strategies of compensation and survival employed by the ego-based self that feels abandoned, isolated and exposed in a seemingly hostile, alien environment, fraught with danger, not governed by law and devoid of higher purpose. The consequence of this profound misconception is ‘dis-ease’, which, with its attendant, dysfunctional responses to the challenges of life, becomes disease.

Homeopathy recognizes the evolutionary processes of disease starting at the invisible level.

As with all evolutionary processes, the origin of disease must have commenced with slight and almost imperceptible changes, which, over generations, mounted incrementally until a critical point was reached when normal function was disturbed: an imbalance that finally manifested in physical change.

Homeopathy recognizes physical disease starts with disruptions in thinking and feeling.

Since disease, even when seemingly precipitated by impingements from without, is primarily soul-based, it must have began with disruptions in thinking and feeling that gradually lead to disturbance of function followed, eventually, by changes in structure that become pathological.

Over tens of thousands of years, disease must have followed a specific path that gradually diversified into the protean forms of acute and chronic disease that afflict humanity today.

Based on founder Samuel Hahnemann’s insight into the origins and evolution of chronic disease, Homeopathy is able to trace disease patterns and unravel disease relationships.

This proposes an unbroken continuum of disease that over generations matured from simple, superficial beginnings into deep-seated complexity. By tracing this morbid evolution in the light of Hahnemann’s theory of the origin of chronic diseases, it is possible to clinically recognise and unravel disease relationships and intelligently address their presentation therapeutically.

Samuel Hahnemann Memorial in Washington, DC. The monument is significant because Hahnemann, the German physician and chemist, the founder of homeopathy, is the first foreigner not associated with the American Revolution to be honored with a sculpture in Washington, D.C
